Bug Dome

Similar to the spanning structures that my students made last week with Tim Johnson, this design in Shenzhen, China is called 'Bug Dome' is inspired by insect cocoons.
The bamboo construction methods are based on local knowledge from rural Guanxi brought into the city by the migrating construction workers.

The space is used during the Shenzhen Biennale for underground bands, poetry reading, discussions, karaoke and as a lounge for the illegal workers from the neighboring camp.

The building offers a shade, a stage and a fireplace. It is a soft organic structure a buffer for man and nature from the exploding urbanism. (more information)
