Julian Watts I

I adore these hand carved sculptural utensils in bleached maple by Canadian sculptor Julian Watts, Thank you Robyn Gordon.

'Julian Watts uses traditional wood carving and furniture making techniques to explore the space between sculptural form and functional object. Using everyday items like wooden utensils as a point of departure, Watts follows the formal, functional, and cultural threads of each object to their most extreme, surreal end points. The result is an ecosystem of both sculptural and functional works that challenge the viewer to reconsider their preconceptions about the objects that make up the world around us.' Julian Watts

Rita's studio

A whole fully furnished room made from plywood.

"We represented the typical style of a Québec living room, the mix of styles and influences taken from trends throughout the years. We used archetypical decoration and lay out. Far from modern condo-style-loft-etc. living rooms which cover the pages of hip magazines, this living room could be yours. Is it really design? What is?"

Craig Alun Smith

Going from Aviad Gil's Conflict chair to this Embracing chair by Canadian designer Craig Alun Smith.
Craig Alun Smith explains his design for this chair called 'wank' as being a comment on war, oil and damage.

“WANK is a metaphor for the relationship between the 1st and “3rd world”, how they are interdependent and how the 3rd world “props up” the 1st. It also speaks to the war for oil in Iraq, the “white” chair is missing a leg possibly due to an roadside IED bomb and is bleeding oil. The materials are Imbuya for the dark able bodied chair, and Sugar Maple for the light, handicapped chair." Craig Alun Smith

Craig is an ex-service man now top Canadian designer.

Aaron Moran

Assemblage artist Aaron Moran is currently artist in residence in Harrison Hot Springs, Canada. Aaron uses found woods to create his assemlages. I have blogged his work about two years ago, since then Aaron seems to be using lots more colour in his work. Aaron's work is simply staple or glue gun construction, but his loose almost random style of construction is very appealing and makes extraordinary forms. (thanks)

Maskull Lasserre

Maskull Lasserre explores the familiar, by creating the unexpected, and so causes us to re-examine our expectations and our acceptance of utility objects in our daily lives. These objects that have become invisible work horses suddenly get an anatomical life of their own, Maskull's workmanship is incredible.
