Henrique Oliveira III

Henrique Oliveira's Making Of Baitogogo at The Palais de Tokyo, Paris 2013.
It has been a long time since I featured the work of Henrique Oliveira but every time I stumble upon his creations I am filled with renewed wonder at the complexity, monumentality and structure of his work. It's shredded quality, a metaphor of destruction or rejuvenation is powerful and moving.

Los Carpinteros (The Carpenters) II

Los Carpinteros (The Carpenters) 'Estanterias consists of  three sculpture/bookcases blur the boundaries between utilitarian objects and architecture. The alteration and exaggeration of the bookcases defies the purely functional aspect of a piece of furniture habitually used in most homes.'Sean Kelly Gallery' 2008

Mario Ceroli I

Today I had the great fortune to visit MAMbo in Bologna where there is a retrospective exhibition by Mario Ceroli with many sculptural pieces including these amazing constructions of  hinged horses. Mario started working in ceramics but influenced by pop art he moved into creating silhouette forms from wood. Mario has worked as a sculptor, set designer, installation artist and furniture designer.

Martine Feipel & Jean Bechameil

Martine Feipel and Jean Bechameil are sculptors who create art installations that challenge our understanding of space pushing spacial constraints into the dimensions of dream and fairytale, making us reassess the man made landscape of our lives. (thank you)"It's a dreamlike vision where everything fell asleep and where we are alone to be awake." Martine Feipel and Jean Bechameil

Mike Rathbun

'Urgency' is an installation made by sculptor Mike Rathbun is made from sustainable poplar wood. Mike likes to make very large scale works that create the same awe as large open spaces or features of nature.
" . . . a grand heroic thing that people can come to with what ever has been going on for them that day, or what ever is going on in their life and creat their own narrative of it." Mike Rathbun

Patrick Berube

Patrick Bérubé's Incidence installation at Montreal's Gallerie SAS. This is a beautiful and subtle installation that looks like just a toy ship in a gallery, until you notice that the wood of the floor has been changed to mirror the wake behind the ship. (Thanks)

Chapsuisat Brothers II

"Our constructions transform space, turning interior and exterior boundaries inside out and toying with the perception of a subjective reality. They demand visitors' active participation, putting them into the position of being an explorer. These environments break down virtual and intellectual habits, testing the explorers and obliging them to trust in their senses." Chapuisat Brothers

Chapuisat Brothers I

I am going to write a few posts about the work of Chapuisat Brothers who work to create environments and objects to challenge space and our interaction and perceptions of it. To me their work is very interesting in its use of materials and scale.

'Pulse' Ben Wolf

These are close up of Ben Wolf's pulse exhibition at the Christina Ray Gallery, New York. Again Ben has taken elements of a building (floorboards etc) and reworked them, collaged them, almost remade the jigsaw, making a surprising installation.

Ben Wolf I

This is my first post about Ben Wolf an artist from Nashville. Ben's work is mainly in installation but his work traverses the disciplines of architecture, design, furniture and fine art for me. This work called 'Dormer House' was created by driving around Detroit, identifying, "houses on the demolition list, rolling up with a generator and several sawsalls, rigging up a unique railing system, anchoring a ratchet to the base of the chimney" to collage the houses into new forms.

Henrique Oliveira II

Henrique Oliveira's installation in this building called 'Monster House' here Henriques plywood has become almost a disease with the ply oozing out of this old building like a living organism. Is it a statement about the disease of the old or the disease of re-development?
