Maarten Baas II

'Sculpt' is a series of 'wobbly' furniture by Maarten Baas based on a quick sketches that have been enlarged to a monumental size. These pieces are made from metal which has then been finished either with a walnut veneer, powdercoated or sandblasted.

I didn't realise that I had not blogged about Maarten Baas here at 'Furniture' as I have previously at 'theartroom'. Maarten Baas is somewhere between an artist and designer, his work is experimental, crazy, fun and has questions as well as answers. Maarten Baas's work often messes with your mind as well as messing with the traditions and consequences of design.

In 'Hey Chair' Baas creates assemblages of household furniture which redefines the function of each component. "A chair became a bookshelf: a lampshade became a vase, a violin a coat rack"
