Ian Grant

Ian Grant has spent many years working with concepts of texture and pattern in wood, he is described as making wooden tarten. He has spent over 36 years of his career perfecting the marquetry skills required to create a wood finish that reflects the rich colourful tones of cloth. Ian has a vast library of woods of some 50 natural colours ranging from pale sycamore, to ebony - with lots of yellows, browns, greens and reds.
"Unfortunately, the colour of the wood is constantly changing. It's one colour when you first cut it, another when you file and work with it, another when it's varnished and yet another when it fades in the sun.''
Ian will be exhibiting at the Scottish Furniture Makers annual exhibition at the Lighthouse which opens this Thursday night.

I am going to feature some of the Scottish furniture makers that will be exhibiting as part of the annual  Scottish Furniture Makers show at the Lighthouse, Glasgow from the 5th-21st of October 2012. This is the work of Ray Beverly who has his workshop on the Isle of Bute and makes bespoke furniture. Here are two of his chairs  crafted in hardwood and inspired by the Bute landscape and true to the character of the timber itself.

Contemporary Scottish Furniture Design Exhibition

Unstable Stool by Angus Ross
This exhibition at The Dovecot, Edinburgh opened this evening, it is a fantastic exhibition and the opening was busy bustling and exciting. The visitors were treated to the work of 26 of Scotland's leading furniture makers, to witness the love, care and skill of fine craftsmanship, to experience the joy of objects made with passion out of wonderful materials. The exhibition runs from now until the 16th October I cannot recommend it highly enough, if you can, please take the time and see this wonderful gathering of Scottish furniture designers. Over the next few days I will be featuring some of the fantastic work you can see there.
"Scottish design and craftsmanship has a well-earned reputation for quality all over the world.
Having seen for myself some of the work of members of the Scottish Furniture Makers Association, I can understand why. This exhibition will not only showcase Scottish ingenuity and skill, but demonstrate how this industry has taken centuries-old trades and made them cutting-edge expressions of twenty-first century drive. I wish them all the very best"
Alex Salmond, First Minister
